چکیده

BACKGROUND This study was performed to show occlusion of the nasofrontal duct and mucocele formation in a goat model. A pilot study was performed to investigate whether a goat is a suitable model for creating nasofrontal duct obstruction and mucocele formation. METHODS Three adult goats underwent frontal sinus anterior table osteoplastic flap creation with identification and occlusion of the nasofrontal outflow tract with frontalis muscle plugging. Three months later, the goats were killed and gross examination of the frontal sinus, along with histopathological confirmation of mucocele formation, were performed. RESULTS All animals showed mucocele formation on gross examination and histological sectioning. There was no gross or histological evidence of bony erosion. The nasofrontal outflow tracts remained occluded. CONCLUSION This study provides a suitable animal model for the investigation of nasofrontal outflow tract obstruction and mucocele formation in the frontal sinus. The goat frontal sinus and nasofrontal outflow tract provide an excellent model for frontal sinus studies because they are comparable in size with humans. The results provide evidence of mucocele formation with occluded nasofrontal outflow tracts.

A frontal swelling with a cautionary tale.

Frontal sinus mucoceles are the most common paranasal mucoceles. They consist of sterile mucus and shed cells and form due to inflammatory changes or chronic nasofrontal duct obstruction. Coincident infection and expansile growth can lead to specific clinical features dependent upon the location of the lesion and the degree of spread. We present a case of a 56-year-old lady with a radiological ...

EVALUATION OF CRANIALIZATION TECHNIQUE IN T HE TREATMENT OF FRONTAL SINUS FRACTU RES

Frontal sinus fractures are of surgical importance because of the microbial flora covering the frontal air sinus and it's proximity with the duramater and brain. There is an increased risk of meningitis when fracture of the posterior wall of the frontal sinus is associated with a dural tear. In this condition, communication occurs between the contaminated space of the air sinus and the intr...

A case of ossifying fibroma of the frontal sinus

Ossifying fibroma is a rare benign tumor of the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinus, and is easily misdiagnosed. In the present study, we report the clinical data in the case of a 46-year-old female patient, treated due to 5-day forehead swelling accompanied by dizziness. CT examination revealed dilation of the right frontal sinus, bone wall integration, dense masses in the cavity, multiple pu...

The management of frontal sinus fractures.

Management algorithms for frontal sinus fractures vary widely. Appropriate treatment depends on an accurate diagnosis, focusing on the physical examination and data from computed tomography scans. One must pay particular attention to involvement of the nasofrontal duct and violation of the posterior table because it is from these injuries that so much of the morbidity relating to these fracture...

Treatment of frontal bone fracture sequelae through inversion of the bone fragment.

Treatment of frontal sinus fractures depends on the structures involved: the anterior wall, the posterior wall and the nasofrontal duct. It may vary from the correction of the defect in the anterior wall to the cranialization with obliteration of the nasofrontal duct. The inversion of the frontal sinus's anterior wall to correct the defect in the fractured region is a good treatment option for ...
